Folder Synchronization

Tuesday, August 4th, 2009

There are a lot of times when I work on my desktop and later want to continue working on my laptop when I am away, but I can’t because I didn’t make a current copy of my work. So I wait till I get back to my desktop to continue. Keeping track of two of the same file is not only a pain but it causes headaches. BUT I have found folder synchronization to be an ideal solution to this problem.

To give you an example of how folder synchronization works:

When I work on my websites I do a lot of changes on both my laptop and desktop, so I created a “shared” folder on my laptop and added all my current website files. Then I created a second “shared” folder on my desktop and created a sync between the two folders. After about an hour, the sync program copied over all of my website files from my laptop over to my desktop. This way I now have current files on both computers. If I change a file on my desktop, the program will take it and replace the one on the laptop, and vice versa. This way no matter when I work with my websites, my files are always current.

There are a few programs that will sync files and folders but I have found Windows Live Sync to be a great solution. It’s a program made by Microsoft and it’s free to use.

You need to install Windows Live Sync on both computers that you want to sync folders on. Once installed you sign in using a Windows Live account, which can be your hotmail account OR if you don’t use hotmail, you can create a windows live account (also free) with any email. I made one with my Gmail email. After that, create some shared folders and wait for them to sync!

This program is great because it runs in the background without you knowing anything is even happening. It works over the internet or over a home network and works on PCs or Macs.

You can get Windows Live Sync HERE.

Media Server: PS3-XBOX 360

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009

Hello everyone! Sorry for the lack of updates, the last couple of weeks I had to take care of finals and whatnot, plus I have been working on a new website for Victory Township, check it out!

Anyways, to the media servers…

There are a lot of ways to access data on your PC and view it on your TV, but if you have a Playstation 3 or XBOX 360, it makes this a lot more convenient. There are many programs that will turn your PC into a media server (a machine that shares media over a network), but MediaMall’s PlayOn is an awesome piece of software that will allow you to view online content and integrate right into the PS3 or XBOX 360.

I can’t talk much about the XBOX because I don’t have access to one, but it should essentially be the same thing as on the PS3, and PlayOn works great on the PS3. MediaMall has also stated that Wii support will be available in the future.

Features

PlayOn is a small program that runs on your PC and will give you the option of viewing online content right on your gaming console. Online content being movies or TV shows from Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Videos, CBS, YouTube, CNN, ESPN, and now Revision3 TV. With Hulu, Netflix and Amazon you need to enter account information in the PlayOn program so you have access to the content. If you don’t have a Netflix or Amazon Video account, no worries because Hulu is a great free service that gives you access to hundreds of TV shows and hundreds of movies (the movies are mostly older) online. Also, Revision3 has some very good lower budget TV shows. Some very good tech shows and other various comedy, educational, etc.

Here is a picture of my PS3 with the PlayOn Menu

The program is still in beta, so there are a lot of updates and bugs that still need to be worked out. There is a free 14 day trial, after that PlayOn costs $39.99 but if you watch TV it is a great purchase and has served many hours of enjoyment! If anything try it out for the 14 days to see how cool it is.
