Media Server: PS3-XBOX 360

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009

Hello everyone! Sorry for the lack of updates, the last couple of weeks I had to take care of finals and whatnot, plus I have been working on a new website for Victory Township, check it out!

Anyways, to the media servers…

There are a lot of ways to access data on your PC and view it on your TV, but if you have a Playstation 3 or XBOX 360, it makes this a lot more convenient. There are many programs that will turn your PC into a media server (a machine that shares media over a network), but MediaMall’s PlayOn is an awesome piece of software that will allow you to view online content and integrate right into the PS3 or XBOX 360.

I can’t talk much about the XBOX because I don’t have access to one, but it should essentially be the same thing as on the PS3, and PlayOn works great on the PS3. MediaMall has also stated that Wii support will be available in the future.

Features

PlayOn is a small program that runs on your PC and will give you the option of viewing online content right on your gaming console. Online content being movies or TV shows from Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Videos, CBS, YouTube, CNN, ESPN, and now Revision3 TV. With Hulu, Netflix and Amazon you need to enter account information in the PlayOn program so you have access to the content. If you don’t have a Netflix or Amazon Video account, no worries because Hulu is a great free service that gives you access to hundreds of TV shows and hundreds of movies (the movies are mostly older) online. Also, Revision3 has some very good lower budget TV shows. Some very good tech shows and other various comedy, educational, etc.

Here is a picture of my PS3 with the PlayOn Menu

The program is still in beta, so there are a lot of updates and bugs that still need to be worked out. There is a free 14 day trial, after that PlayOn costs $39.99 but if you watch TV it is a great purchase and has served many hours of enjoyment! If anything try it out for the 14 days to see how cool it is.
